Handpiece Maintenance Training  in Your Office

The Dentist’s Choice will conduct a 20 to 30 minute class in your office for you and your staff on proper handpiece maintenance. Using the tips covered in this class will result in a longer period of time between your repairs. This will save you TIME and MONEY on your handpiece repairs. This class can be scheduled at your convenience to fit your schedule.

Maintenance Tips

High Speed Maintenance
  1. Clean exterior surface and fiberoptics with alcohol. (Do not use harsh cleaners or ultrasonic cleaner.)
  2. Insert a bur, rotate bur between bur and forefinger to insure it rotates smoothly.
  3. Spray Synthetic Lubricant with integrated cleaner into drive air tube (small hole).*
  4. Attach handpiece to tubing, aim handpiece at paper towel and run for 10 to 20 seconds.
  5. Place Handpiece in Autoclave bag and seal.
  6. Autoclave handpiece following recommended procedures. Make sure and use the handpiece setting.
  7. Remove handpiece and let cool naturally with paper side of autoclave bag up. Do not cool handpiece artificially.

High Speed Tips

  1. High speed handpieces cannot be over-lubricated.
  2. Keep manufacturer’s recommended procedures on file for reference.
  3. Never use pin oil or syringe oil on high speed handpieces.
  4. Lubricate with Synthetic Lubricant with integrated cleaner before autoclaving.
  5. Set air pressure to Manufacturer’s specifications.
  6. Never run a highspeed handpiece without a bur inserted.
  7. Never use harsh disinfectants like Cavicide on handpieces. Autoclave will kill any germs, viruses, etc. present.
  8. Cool down naturally with paper side of autoclave bag up to allow heat and moisture to dissipate.

Star Lube Free High Speed Maintenance

Star Lube Free High Speed handpieces require no lubricant according to manufacturer’s instructions. Other than not using lubricant, maintenance procedures are the same. If you want to achieve a longer service life for your Star hand-pieces, lubricating will increase the life of the bearings from 7 or 8 months to at least a year. If you decide to lubricate your star handpieces, just follow the High Speed Maintenance procedures above.

Low Speed Lubrication and Maintenance

  1. Clean exterior surface with alcohol. (Do not use harsh cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, or introduce cleaner into motor.)
  2. Insert a bur and lock bur into place.
  3. Add 2 to 3 drops of oil into drive air tube.(small hole)*
  4. Attach handpiece to tubing, and run at high speed for 10 seconds.
  5. If autoclaving motors, follow procedures for autoclaving high speeds.

Low Speed Tips

  1. Lubricate after each use.
  2. Keep manufacturer’s recommended procedures on file for reference.
  3. Set air pressure to manufacturer’s specifications.
  4. Use high viscosity lubricating and cleaning oil.
  5. Clean threads while handpiece is removed from tubing.
*Ask us about special lube adapters for your handpiece model that directs the lubricant to the correct location.
